Spatio-temporal variability of lightning climatology and its association with thunderstorm indices over India

Lightning is an electrical discharge — a ‘spark’ or ‘flash’ as charged regions in the atmosphere instantly balance themselves through this discharge. It beautiful and deadly naturally occurring phenomenon. In June 2020, more than hundred people died state Bihar of India only 3 days’ span due to lightning events. study, Imaging Sensor (LIS) from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite with very high spatial resolution 0.1° has been utilized create climatology for 16 years during period 1998 2013. Diurnal, monthly, seasonal variations occurrence flash rate density have also analyzed. TRMM Low-Resolution Monthly Time Series (LRMTS) 2.5° datasets used trend analysis. The diurnal event mainly occurs afternoon/evening time duration (1400–1900 h) around 0.001 flashes/km2/h. highest occurred month May (0.04 flashes/km2/day) least December (0.005 flashes/km2/day). distribution counts by season over landmass pre-monsoon months (MAM) which ranges 0.248 0.491 flashes/km2/day, monsoon (JJA) 0.284 0.451 flashes/km2/day decreases afterward. Spatially, seen North-Eastern region along Bangladesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Jammu Kashmir region. shows positive 0.04 flashes post-monsoon (SON) negative − 0.021 central India. CAPE K-Index positively correlated seasonally but significantly 0.83 season. This study focused on finding out district wise hotspots Rajouri Reasi 121 115 flashes/km2/yr, respectively.
